AeroPress Filters: Which Ones Fit the Original, the Go, and the XL?
Two of the three AeroPress models share filters. The third does not, and buying the wrong 350-pack is the most common AeroPress ordering mistake.

There are three AeroPress models in circulation and only two filter sizes, which sounds simple until you are looking at a marketplace listing that says 'fits AeroPress' with no further detail. The Original and the AeroPress Go use identical paper filters — the Go is a shorter chamber in a travel mug, not a narrower one, so the diameter is unchanged. The AeroPress XL is a genuinely bigger cylinder and takes its own larger filters that fit nothing else.
The compatibility table
- AeroPress Original: standard AeroPress paper micro-filters. The 350-pack everyone owns.
- AeroPress Go: same standard filters as the Original. Fully interchangeable — one pack covers both.
- AeroPress XL: XL-specific filters only. Larger diameter; standard filters drop through or fold up the side.
- Metal filters: sold per-model. A metal disc cut for the Original will not seat in an XL cap.
If you own an Original and later buy a Go for travel, your filter stock carries over and you never think about it again. If you upgrade to the XL, treat it as a separate consumable line — and keep the packs apart, because the two sizes are hard to tell apart once they are loose on a shelf.
Paper or metal changes the cup more than the model does
The AeroPress paper filter is thin, and it still removes nearly all the oils and fines — which is why AeroPress coffee tastes clean and slightly tea-like compared to a French press. Swap in a metal disc and you keep the oils and some fine sediment: the body gets heavier, the finish gets rounder, and the cup moves toward French-press territory without the grit. Neither is correct. Paper is the safer default and what most recipes assume.
One practical note in paper's favor: a used paper filter and puck eject together in one motion into the bin. Metal filters have to be rinsed and dried every single brew, which is a small tax you pay 365 times a year.
Where the Prismo fits in
The Fellow Prismo replaces the entire filter cap with a pressure-actuated valve and an etched metal screen. The valve holds the water in the chamber until you press, which means you can do a genuine full immersion steep with no drip-through, and the added back-pressure produces a thicker, more espresso-like shot. It is designed around the Original's cap thread — check the listing against your specific model before ordering, and do not assume it carries over to the XL.

- Do AeroPress Go and AeroPress Original use the same filters?
- Yes. The Go has a shorter chamber than the Original but the same diameter, so both use the standard AeroPress paper micro-filters. One pack covers both models, and there is no difference in how they brew.
- Can I use regular AeroPress filters in the AeroPress XL?
- No. The XL has a wider chamber and needs XL-specific filters. A standard filter is too small — it either drops through the cap or folds up the side and lets grounds into your cup. Stock XL filters separately and keep the packs labeled.
- Is a metal AeroPress filter better than paper?
- Neither is better; they make different coffee. Paper strips oils and fines for a clean, tea-like cup — what most AeroPress recipes are written for. Metal passes oils and some fine sediment through for a heavier body and rounder finish. Metal also has to be rinsed and dried every brew, while paper ejects with the puck.
- Does the Fellow Prismo fit every AeroPress?
- The Prismo is built around the Original's cap thread. Check the product listing against your exact model before ordering, and do not assume compatibility with the XL, which has a different cap diameter.
