Does a Bialetti Work on a Glass-Top Stove?
Yes — but the aluminium Moka Express has two specific failure modes on glass and ceramic hobs, and one of them will scratch your cooktop.

The short answer is yes: a classic aluminium Bialetti Moka Express works on a glass-top, ceramic or radiant electric cooktop. These stoves heat by radiant element under the glass and do not care what metal the pot is made of — unlike induction, which does care, and which an aluminium moka pot will simply ignore. But 'works' is doing some quiet work in that sentence, because there are two real problems specific to glass, and neither is mentioned on the box.
Problem one: the base is smaller than the burner
A 3-cup Moka Express has a base around 3 inches across. Many glass cooktops have a smallest element bigger than that, and some newer models use pan-detection sensors that will not fire an element for a base that small. Even where it does fire, the exposed ring of element around the pot radiates heat straight up the sides — scorching the handle, cooking the coffee from the outside in, and giving you the bitter, over-extracted cup people blame on the pot.
- Use the smallest element you have, always.
- Keep the heat at medium-low. A moka pot wants a slow, gentle build, not a race.
- If the pot is much smaller than the element, size up the pot rather than turning the heat down further — a 6-cup base covers a small element much better than a 3-cup.
- Never let it run dry on a hot element; that is how handles melt and gaskets die.
Problem two: aluminium marks glass
Soft aluminium dragged across ceramic glass leaves grey metal-transfer streaks. They are not scratches in the glass and they come off with a cooktop cleaner, but they come back every time you slide the pot instead of lifting it. If you are precious about your cooktop, lift the pot on and off, and check the base occasionally for burrs or a warped ring — a moka pot that has been overheated can develop a slightly convex base, which both rocks on glass and heats unevenly.
When to buy the stainless Venus instead
If you have an induction hob, or you expect to move to one, the aluminium Moka Express is a dead end — aluminium is not ferromagnetic and induction will not see it at all. The Bialetti Venus is the same brewing principle in stainless steel with a ferromagnetic base, so it works on induction, glass, gas and electric alike. It is also heavier, more durable, dishwasher-tolerant, and it does not leave grey marks on a ceramic cooktop.
The trade is flavour tradition and price. Aluminium conducts heat faster and is what the original 1933 design was built around; a lot of long-time moka drinkers insist the aluminium pot makes a rounder cup. If your stove is glass or gas and always will be, the Moka Express is still the classic pick. If there is any induction in your future, buy the Venus once instead of the Moka Express twice.

- Can you use an aluminium Bialetti on a ceramic or glass cooktop?
- Yes. Glass-top, ceramic and radiant electric stoves heat by radiant element and work with any metal, including aluminium. Use the smallest element at medium-low heat, and lift rather than slide the pot to avoid leaving grey metal-transfer marks on the glass.
- Why won't my glass cooktop detect my moka pot?
- Some newer glass and ceramic cooktops use pan-detection sensors with a minimum base size, and a 3-cup moka pot's roughly 3-inch base can fall below it. Move to the smallest element, or use a larger 6-cup pot whose base covers more of the element.
- Does a moka pot scratch a glass stove?
- It does not usually scratch the glass, but soft aluminium sliding across ceramic leaves grey metal-transfer streaks that need a cooktop cleaner to remove. Lifting the pot on and off prevents it. A warped or burred base from past overheating makes marking much worse.
- Which Bialetti works on induction?
- The stainless steel Bialetti Venus, which has a ferromagnetic base. The classic aluminium Moka Express will not work on induction at all — aluminium is not magnetic, so the hob never detects it. The Venus also works on glass, gas and electric, making it the safer buy if your stove might change.
