Hario V60 Sizes: 01 vs 02 vs 03 (and Why Filters Don't Swap)
Three cone sizes, three incompatible filters, and one size that's right for about 90% of people. Here's how to not buy the wrong one twice.

The V60 comes in three sizes, numbered 01, 02 and 03, and the numbers tell you nothing useful about capacity. Worse, the paper filters are size-specific and completely non-interchangeable, so getting the dripper wrong means getting every future filter order wrong too. This is the one pour-over decision worth two minutes of thought before you click buy.
What each size actually brews
- 01 — roughly 200–360 ml (1–2 cups). Small cone, small drawdown. Genuinely single-serve.
- 02 — up to about 600 ml (1–4 cups). The default, and the size almost every V60 recipe online is written for.
- 03 — up to about 1,000 ml (up to 6 cups). Big cone for batch brewing and entertaining.
The rule that decides it: filters do not cross sizes
Each dripper needs its own matching filter, and using the wrong one fails in two distinct, obvious ways. An 01 filter in an 02 cone sits too low — it doesn't reach the top of the cone, so water pours down the exposed wall and bypasses the coffee bed entirely, giving you weak, sour, under-extracted coffee no matter how carefully you poured. An 02 filter in an 01 cone is the opposite problem: too much paper for the space, so it crumples, folds over on itself, and chokes the flow until the brew stalls.
So the dripper choice locks in a consumable you'll be buying for years. Pick by the batch size you brew most often, not the largest one you can imagine brewing.
The 02 is the right answer for almost everyone
The 02 handles a single 250 ml mug perfectly well and scales to four cups when someone visits. Every V60 recipe you'll find — every YouTube tutorial, every roaster's brew card, every competition method — assumes an 02. Filters are stocked everywhere. It is the size that costs you nothing in flexibility and saves you from a filter-supply problem.
Buy the 01 only if you are certain you will never brew for two: it's genuinely better at very small single cups, because a 15 g dose in an 02 cone forms a thin bed that's easy to over-extract. Buy the 03 only if brewing for four-plus is your normal, not your occasional — a small dose in a 03 has the same thin-bed problem, magnified.

One more thing the size decision affects
Bigger cone, bigger dose, and pour-over is unforgiving about ratio. A V60 lives or dies on getting the coffee-to-water number right and pouring to it, which is very hard to do by eye — a few grams either way at the 02's 25 g dose moves the cup noticeably. A scale with a timer is what turns a good V60 into a repeatable one.

- What size Hario V60 should I buy?
- The 02 for almost everyone. It brews a single mug well and scales to about four cups, and every published V60 recipe is written for it, so filters and instructions are easy to find. Choose the 01 only if you will always brew one small cup, and the 03 only if brewing for four or more is your routine.
- Are Hario V60 filters interchangeable between sizes?
- No. Each dripper needs its matching filter. An 01 filter in an 02 dripper sits too low and lets water run down the cone wall past the coffee, producing weak, sour coffee. An 02 filter in an 01 dripper crumples and folds, choking the flow. Always match the filter number to the dripper number.
- How much coffee does a V60 02 make?
- Up to about 600 ml, or roughly four small cups. In practice most people brew a single 250–350 ml mug in it, using around 15–22 g of coffee, and it handles that range comfortably.
- Can I use a V60 03 for a single cup?
- You can, but it isn't ideal. A small dose spread across the wide 03 cone forms a very shallow coffee bed, which water passes through too quickly and unevenly — the usual result is thin, over-extracted coffee. Match the cone to your normal batch size rather than your maximum one.
